# Which ship is my Tesla on, and how long does the trip take?

Many Teslas sold outside the United States reach their buyer on a car carrier. The ship, the port and the weeks at sea depend on which factory built your car. Here is the route from factory to handover, from orders tracked in Delivery Status and the ships the app follows.

## In short

- Every UK Model 3 with a VIN in the app was built in Shanghai (536 of 536), and so were 535 of 539 Canadian Model 3s. UK Model Ys all came from Berlin (339 of 339).
- Car carriers the app follows took a median 36.5 days from Shanghai to Southampton (8 voyages) and 37 days to Zeebrugge (6 voyages). Shanghai to Japan took about 8 days.
- For Shanghai-built cars, the median time from VIN to delivery was 40.8 days in the UK and Ireland (108 orders) and 9.3 days in France (78 orders).
- On one Shanghai to Southampton voyage with 24 delivered orders, cars reached their owners a median 16.4 days after the ship docked.
- In the US, cars were handed over a median 1.8 days after the app saw them arrive at the delivery center (391 orders).

## What does Tesla say about shipping?

Tesla does not publish ship names or sailing dates. Its delivery page says you get a notification to schedule a delivery appointment "once you have a vehicle assigned to your order and we have an estimate for when it will arrive at the designated delivery location." [\[1\]](#source-1) Ship names come from buyers, forum trackers and carrier data.

## Which factory builds my Tesla?

The first three characters of the VIN tell you: LRW is Shanghai, XP7 is Berlin, and 5YJ, 7SA or 7G2 is a US factory. [\[8\]](#source-8) Most countries got each model from one factory: Berlin built 99% of French Model Ys (2,573 orders) and 99% of Canadian ones (511). There is a separate guide on [how long the VIN takes by country and factory](https://deliverystatus.app/guides/tesla-order-to-vin-by-country).

Share of cars built in Shanghai, by model and country

For orders with a VIN, the share whose VIN shows Giga Shanghai. The rest were built in Berlin or the US.

A Model 3 for Europe, the UK or Canada sails from China. A Model Y for those markets comes from Berlin, and most for mainland Europe go by road or rail. Japan, Korea, Colombia and Australia get Shanghai Model Ys.

Canada may change soon. Tesla paused Canadian orders for the Shanghai-built Model 3 Premium on 13 October, citing its import quota for Chinese-made EVs. [\[3\]](#source-3) On 26 October, Electrek reported Canadian Model 3 specs that match the Fremont-built car. [\[4\]](#source-4)

## Which ports do Tesla ships use?

Shanghai-built cars for Europe are unloaded mainly at Southampton, Zeebrugge, Barcelona and Koper, and Berlin-built Model Ys for Canada arrive in Halifax. The "Tesla Shipping Movements" thread on Tesla Motors Club says ships often call at Southampton and then Zeebrugge, and that Irish cars go on to Dublin from Zeebrugge. ## How long are Teslas at sea?

Car carriers the app follows took a median 36.5 days from Shanghai to Southampton and 37 days to Zeebrugge, about five weeks. The figures count voyages from departure to the next listed port, so samples are small.

Much of the Europe figure depends on the Red Sea. Lloyd's List Intelligence, quoted by Kuehne+Nagel in October 2026, says most non-Chinese car carrier operators still sail around the Cape of Good Hope. [\[7\]](#source-7) Two September voyages that went through Suez reached Koper and Portbury in 27 and 28 days.

## How long from VIN to delivery on each route?

The wait after the VIN ran from a median 6.5 days in the US to 40.8 days for Shanghai cars in the UK and Ireland. The [VIN guide](https://deliverystatus.app/guides/tesla-vin-assigned-what-happens-next) has the overall figures for Berlin and Shanghai cars delivered in Europe. [\[8\]](#source-8)

A Shanghai car for mainland Europe usually got its VIN after it set sail: the median VIN to delivery time (20 days, 9.3 in France) is shorter than the trip (about 37 days). Some buyers report that UK cars get their VIN around loading, which would put the whole voyage after it. [\[5\]](#source-5)

The sea trip is not always the long part. Japan is about 8 days by sea from Shanghai, yet the median from VIN to delivery there was 35.5 days. See [how accurate the delivery window is](https://deliverystatus.app/guides/tesla-delivery-window-accuracy).

## How long from the port to my driveway?

On one Shanghai to Southampton voyage, cars reached their owners a median 16.4 days after the ship docked. It docked on 10 September 2026\. Of 53 orders linked to it in ship tracking (BETA), 24 have a recorded delivery, all within 21 days.

| Step | Orders | Median | Range |
| ------------------------------------------ | ------ | --------- | ----------------------------- |
| Ship docked to delivery, UK (one voyage) | 24 | 16.4 days | 9.4 to 21 days (full range) |
| Arrived at delivery center to delivery, US | 391 | 1.8 days | 0.9 to 3.1 days (middle half) |

A rule of thumb posted on TFF Forum in October 2026 is 5 to 10 days from unloading to the delivery center. [\[9\]](#source-9)

## How can you find your ship?

Start with the VIN: LRW means a sea voyage from Shanghai, and you can [match a VIN to a ship](https://deliverystatus.app/tesla-vin-ship). XP7 cars for mainland Europe usually have no deep-sea ship to follow. Advisors sometimes share the ship name or port, and forum threads list confirmed and suspected ships. [\[5\]](#source-5) [\[6\]](#source-6) [\[10\]](#source-10) In Delivery Status, [ship tracking (BETA, Pro)](https://deliverystatus.app/tesla-ship-tracking) links an order to a ship when a carrier publishes the VIN, and you can link one yourself on the Vessel Map (Pro). A linked ship helps you follow the car. Tesla has not confirmed it.

## What these numbers do not show

- Ship matching is incomplete. About one in five Shanghai-built UK orders with a VIN had a ship linked (107 of 536), and far fewer Shanghai-built Canadian orders, Model 3 and Model Y together (23 of 537).
- Days at sea count voyages from port calls, not orders.
- The UK port-to-delivery figure comes from one voyage, and more than half of its linked orders have no recorded delivery yet.
- The figures show usual timing for a route, only for app users. They cannot place your own car.

## About the numbers

Order figures come from Delivery Status for Tesla, read on 29 October 2026, and cover only people who track their order in the app. The factory shares rest on 115 to 539 orders with a VIN for each model and country. The VIN to delivery medians rest on 25 to 824 delivered orders per route (26 August to 29 October 2026), and the US arrival figure on 391 orders. Days at sea come from public port call data: 47 voyages that departed March to October 2026, 5 to 12 for each route. The port to delivery figure for the UK is one voyage with 24 delivered orders out of 53 linked. Ship links come from carrier data and links buyers add. Groups with fewer than 20 orders are left out.
