Tesla VIN assigned: what happens next.

A VIN means Tesla has matched a real car to your order. For most orders the delivery date still moves after that, and the time from VIN to keys depends mostly on where the car was built.

In short

  • In Europe, cars from Berlin arrived a median 17 days after the VIN. Cars from Shanghai took 26 days.
  • 78% of orders still saw the delivery window or appointment change after the VIN. The typical later move was 2 days.
  • Almost half of the appointments came within a week of the VIN.
  • About 1 in 100 orders had its VIN swapped, and about as many lost one.

What the VIN tells you

The vehicle identification number is the 17 character code of one specific car. When it shows up next to your order in the Tesla app, Tesla has allocated a car to you. It may already be built, or it may still be on the line or on a ship.

The first three characters name the maker and the plant group. In the orders tracked in the app, VINs that start with XP7 come from Berlin and VINs that start with LRW come from Shanghai. Tesla's own decoder filing with the US regulator lists 5YJ, 7SA and 7G2 for cars built in the United States. Under the US rule, position 10 is the model year and position 11 is the plant.

Some choices lock once the VIN appears. In the US, Tesla lets you edit your design until a VIN is assigned, and after that the car can no longer move to another delivery location. In Europe, Tesla's support pages put the cut-off for design changes at the final invoice instead.

How long from VIN to delivery

Tesla does not publish a number for this, and forum answers range from three days to a month. The app has the dates for orders that were actually delivered. For cars delivered in Europe, they look like this.

Days from VIN to delivery, delivered orders in Europe tracked in the app, 2026. Factory read from the VIN. Middle half means a quarter of orders were faster and a quarter slower.
FactoryOrdersMedianMiddle half
Berlin89817 days14 to 22 days
Shanghai17926 days16 to 40 days
United States and other12625 days18 to 40 days

Berlin cars were the quickest and the most predictable, since most reach European buyers by road or rail. Cars from Shanghai and the US still have a long sea crossing ahead, and their middle half is about three times as wide. In 2022, an accessory retailer that tracks the ships put the crossing from Shanghai at about 23 days to Koper and 28 to 30 days to Zeebrugge. Routes and ships may have changed since.

The delivery appointment often comes much sooner than the car. Of 4,916 orders that logged both events, 22% had an appointment within a day of the VIN and 46% within a week. The average gap was 11 days.

Your date can still move

Tesla's own delivery page warns that the estimated window may change or disappear for a while. In the app's data it usually does: of 6,379 orders with a VIN, 78% saw the delivery window or appointment change at least once after the VIN arrived. That was 86% for Berlin cars and 69% for Shanghai cars.

A change is not always bad news. Most changes moved the date later, but those moves were small, while the moves earlier were larger.

Why someone who ordered later got a VIN first

It is a common question on Reddit and on Dutch and Canadian forums, and for Model Y the factory explains a lot of it. Across all countries, Model Y orders built in Shanghai got a VIN a median 41 days after ordering and orders built in Berlin after 81 days, but Shanghai cars then took longer to arrive in Europe. The guide to order-to-VIN times by country and factory has the full tables.

When the VIN disappears or changes

Between July and October 2026, 77 of 6,379 orders (1.2%) were given more than one VIN, and 60 of 5,667 (1.1%) lost a VIN they had been shown. Owners in forum threads mention a fault found on the first car or a hold on a whole batch. Tesla does not give a reason.

There is little you can do to speed it up. A new VIN normally means a new delivery date, so check your financing and trade-in dates again once the new car appears.

What Tesla asks you to do after the VIN

The tasks in the Tesla app unlock once a car is assigned. What they ask depends on where you live.

  • United States: upload proof of insurance once you have a VIN. Pay by electronic check in the app, by wire, or by certified check, all from one account. Credit cards are not accepted. Agreements appear within 24 hours of the appointment, and an appointment less than 48 hours away cannot be moved in the app.
  • United Kingdom: insurance is required, and you need the registration plate to finalise it. Tesla registers the car with the DVLA on delivery day. Use your full RN number as the payment reference.
  • Germany: you register the car yourself, within 21 days of delivery. Tesla posts the documents once your payment is in. You need insurance first, and the HSN and TSN codes are on the certificate of conformity.
  • Netherlands: Tesla registers the car and requests the plate once your payment method and address are confirmed. The plate number arrives by email. Arrange insurance before delivery.

When VINs tend to show up

Of 8,272 VIN events the app recorded, most arrived on weekdays. Tuesday had the most (1,661) and Sunday the fewest (485). The busiest hours were late afternoon in European time, and the quietest were the early morning. These are the times the app noticed a VIN, so treat the hours as rough.

Deliveries also bunch up at the end of a quarter. In the app's data, September 2026 had about six times as many delivered orders as August, with more in the second half of the month. The app also gained users over that period, and this is a single quarter, so it may not repeat.

Before delivery day

Use the days between VIN and appointment for the paperwork, so the handover itself is only about the car. Check that the VIN in the Tesla app matches the one on your documents, that insurance is active, and that payment has cleared.

At the handover, inspect the paint in daylight, check panel gaps, glass and wheels, and test the phone key, charging and every port before you accept. The free delivery checklist walks through each part and saves your progress in this browser. How long you have to report issues afterwards differs between regions and changes over time, so check Tesla's current terms for your country.

About the numbers

The numbers come from orders that people track in Delivery Status for Tesla, read on 15 October 2026. They cover app users rather than every Tesla buyer, and most of those users order in Europe or North America. Date changes run from July to October 2026, when the app's change log started, and each one is dated when the app saw it, which can be a little after Tesla made it.
